1946 Taylorcraft BC-12D

This airplane is a joy to fly. It is fast, 85 knot cruise, and lands slowly at 32 knots. It sips fuel at less than 4 gallons an hour. I had lost my medical and bought this aircraft to be used as a Light Sport Aircraft. My wife did not like the idea of having to hand crank the airplane, so a compromise was worked out and I built up the new engine for it. This is the perfect airplane for someone that wants a "real" airplane, not a kite and yet wants many of the features of the current day advances. It falls under the Light Sport rules and can be operated without a medical.

Originally this aircraft used a Continental A - 65 - 8. This was converted to an A - 65 - 9 in February 2004. The "new" engine was built up with A- 80 parts. The prop only had 10 hours and is still being used. The crank and cam were NDT inspected and the engine runs great. The ignition has one Slick Magneto (new in 2004) and one Light Speed Plasma Ignition System (new in June, 2006).
The -9 engine has a starter. This is a Bendix Starter and is big and works great. The starter goes through the firewall. The firewall was modified, retaining the stainless steel integrity. The fuel tank is directly behind the firewall and had to be modified. The main tank now holds about 9.5 gallons but this aircraft has two wing tanks, each capable of 6 gallons. The always leaking fuel valves, for those tanks, were replaced with much higher quality ball valves. The plasma ignition makes the engine very easy to start. The battery, 12 volt, is installed under the bag behind the bench seat. It runs the plasma ignition, the 720 channel com radio, Garmin Pilot III GPS (included, with internal battery backup), voice activated intercom, position lights and starts the engine. You can run for hours and hours before running the battery down. There is no generator or alternator.
All of these modifications made the potential 337 paperwork, with the FAA, a nightmare. I licensed the airplane under the Experimental for Exhibition rules. Once a year, I send a FAX to my local FSDO and tell them where the airplane will be flown each month for the following year. Another FAX can update that if necessary. The result is a very user friendly airplane. I can install quality ball valves, an A&P can do the conditional inspections and I can make the airplane better when things need changing. I installed an Aviation Products tail wheel with differential springs that is far superior to anything that is certified because of this license. The main tires are Goodyear Custom Flight with non-leaking tubes. The brakes are original and very good. The airspeed indicator is from a military helicopter and can record below 20 knots. You can see it indicate, with a little head, wind while taxing. The fabric is in good shape, and the paint is okay. The interior was redone in 2004.
The strut AD was complied with last month. The Certificate of Compliance can be seen with all of the pictures.
My son flew this airplane many hours and we even took a cross country trip in it from Columbus, Indiana to Albuquerque, New Mexico and back.
I got my medical back and we need room in the hangar for a new airplane that is coming.
